The telly's on, turned to a football match between the Bristol Rovers and Oldham Athletic.

There's a six-pack of Guinness and a big bowl of Hog Lumps on the coffee table.

Danny's wearing his blue-and-white jersey, ready to cheer his team on.

"I can't believe you ain't never even watched a whole game all the way through. I mean, how could you even not be a footie fan at all?"

Nicholas is on the sofa beside him, looking somewhat bemused.

He shrugs.

"Team sports were just never a priority, I suppose."

"Priority? I didn't say nothin' about it bein' a priority, mate. Just somethin' to take your mind off your priorities in the first place, y'know? Ooh, whistle blow, game's startin'."

He takes a sip of beer while his boys in blue-and-white and the visiting team in blue-and-orange fanned out across the football field.

"You're forgetting what I was like before I met you."

He leans back into the soft sofa cushions and waits for the show to begin.

"Well, yeah, I know, but...c'mon, this's a national pastime. Hog Lump?" He passes the bowl to him without taking his eyes off the screen, as several Rovers move the ball amongst them with deft kicks.

"Yes, I somehow managed to completely disregard our collective national obsession. Try not to act too shocked."

He reaches for a handful absently. Mmm, deep-fried pig skin.

"They're really quite graceful, aren't they?"

With a nod and chuckle: "Sometimes you still baffle me, though. Keeps things interesting."

He grabs a handful of pig skins for himself. "Yeah, they're graceful now, but some of 'em take to breakin' the rules now'n again, like playin' too rough or just bein' dirty. That's when the ref pulls out a yellow card or a red card. You'll see."

"Ah, of course."

It wouldn't be any fun if they played by the rules all the time, now would it? The attention he pays the game now would make any ref envious.

While the commentators commentate, Danny makes the occasional commentary himself, along the lines of, "Ooh! What th'fuck was that move, mate?", "YES! DENIED!", or "Ha ha, you twat!"

As the play progresses, Nicholas alternates between keeping an eye on the game and watching Danny's reaction to it. It's sort of a toss-up at this point as to which is more entertaining.

The Rovers are going for a goal. It's a three-man effort as they pass the ball among them, dodging the other team. Danny's on the edge of his seat! But they MISS! And he chucks Nicholas's shoulder.

"FUCK, didja see that! So close!"

He lets out a disappointed groan as the goal is missed. Danny's enthusiasm is catchy, even in defeat.

Danny leans back against the cushions with a sigh and stuffs some pigsnacks into his mouth.

"Oh well, next time they'll get it. Or maybe Oldham'll fuck up. That's the thing, y'know, sometimes all it takes is for the other team to fuck up. Just one mistake, one show of weakness, an' if the Rovers are on their game, they can zoom in to take advantage of-- You're offside, that was offside! YES! Call 'im on that, you twat!-- Sorry. See, that there was a fuck-up."

After a brief cheer, he nods.

"A lot of things are like that."

... And surprisingly, he leaves it at that.

He points at the screen. "See, now the Rovers get a free kick, since that was an offense against 'em. See, the other team, they're lining up to try to block it, see. Right, No. 14 has got to kick it to No. 5 first, see, who's gonna try to sink it-- and here we go-- and-- ahh, damn it!"

Another miss. But Danny refuses to believe all the naysayers who say nayingly that the Rovers are shite.
